Hop on and listen to jazz! In the 30-minute Swing Dance experience workshop, swing dance enthusiasts from ""Swing Pocket"" will lead the participants to learn simple dance steps together, and enjoy the vibes brought by music and dance with the relaxed and happy rhythm of jazz.
What is Swing Dance?
Swing dance originated in New York in the 1920s and 1940s. It is a social dance that evolved from African Americans and combines African rhythms and European pas de deux.
Why Swing Dance in this Christmas?
Christmas is joy! Swing is a genre of jazz made for dancing. As the accent is on the downbeat, it gives people a happy, swaying, energetic but slow and laid-back feeling. Swing dance is often danced with swing jazz music. There is no particular dance route, and dancers improvise according to the music and the mood of the moment. There is no need for a fixed partner, lead and follow, and no strict gender distinctions. The dance steps are simple, and beginners can easily get started.

About Swing Pocket
Swing Pocket was founded in 2021 by a group of swing dance enthusiasts. The group’s aims are to promote swing dance in Hong Kong, explore the relationship between dance and jazz music, and connect swing dance with other local arts communities.

- Swing Dancing, at its heart, is a social dance. We will be rotating partners during class.
